Traditional teaching methods often fail to fully engage students in the field of IoT, particularly when it comes to applying machine learning at the edge. This paper presents an innovative pedagogical approach titled “IoT Makers,” aimed at MSc Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning students. The activity integrates Tiny Machine Learning (TinyML) into IoT projects, encouraging hands-on learning and collaborative problem-solving. The course introduces TinyML as a service (SaaS) using Edge Impulse as the primary platform. Students then develop real-world IoT solutions such as Smart Agriculture, Health Monitoring, and Smart Buildings, utilizing a variety of simulation tools. The results demonstrate enhanced engagement, practical application of theoretical concepts, and improved problem-solving skills among students.<\/span><\/p>

Dr. Helen K. Joy <\/span>earned her B.E. in Electronics and Communication from Anna University, Chennai, followed by an M.E. in Applied Electronics with a gold medal from Satyabhama University, Chennai. She completed her PhD in Video Processing with Machine Learning at Reva University, Bengaluru. Currently, she serves as an Assistant Professor in the Computer Science Department at Christ University, Bengaluru. Her research interests include deep learning, video compression, and digital image processing. Dr. Helen K Joy has an extensive academic portfolio, having authored and co-authored over 20 journal publications, conference papers, and book chapters.
